Is There Any Treatment for My PCOS Symptoms?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is an illness that affects nearly 1 in 10 women, and it’s something that many of our patients struggle with. At The Women’s Specialists of Fayette located in Fayetteville, Georgia, we take pride in providing specialized care for our patients struggling with PCOS. We make it a priority to ensure that any symptoms are thoroughly examined and analyzed so the correct treatment can be implemented.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a condition that’s common among women in their childbearing years. The presence of PCOS means that you have a reproductive hormonal imbalance and metabolism problems that can negatively impact your overall health and appearance.
The hormonal imbalance causes issues with your ovaries, which may develop cysts (small fluid-filled sacs), ultimately impacting the integrity of the egg that is released each month during a normal menstruation cycle. With PCOS, your egg may not be released properly during ovulation, or it may succumb to developmental issues and not form correctly. All of this can lead to infertility.
What are the symptoms of PCOS?
In certain patients, you can begin to see signs and symptoms of PCOS around the first menstrual cycle during puberty. Other women might not see signs until much later, like when attempting to become pregnant. Symptoms of PCOS can vary, but typically you can expect to experience:
- Missed, irregular, or prolonged menstrual cycles
- Unusual acne on your face, shoulders, and back
- Weight gain
- Hair in places you don’t want, such as your face, chin, back, and belly
- Hair loss or thinning hair that resembles male-pattern baldness
- Darkening of the skin in the neck, groin, and under the breasts
- Small, excess flaps of skin in the neck and armpit areas known as skin tags
Patients who are obese will often experience more extreme versions of these symptoms.
How is PCOS treated?
There’s no cure for PCOS, but its symptoms can be easily managed. Treatment for PCOS is highly dependent upon your circumstances. Your age, weight, overall health, and desire to become pregnant will all play a role in how we treat your condition. We’ll work closely with you to create a specialized and tailored treatment plan. This plan might consist of steps such as changing your diet, exercising more to lose weight, and medication that helps eliminate the hormonal imbalance your body is experiencing.
